Dick Speaks

Dick Cheney; from official US portrait; modified by GIMP by BachsterDick Cheney[1] calls John McClain’s running-mate selection of Sarah Palin to be a “mistake” in an article published in Monday’s Washington Post.

No! Really?

Cheney doesn’t think the choice was “well handled,” and he’s cautioning Mitt Romney against making a similar mistake (perhaps he’s heard rumors that the Mitt is considering one-upping McCain with a pick of Justin Bieber). The obvious solution, of course, is for Romney to appoint Cheney to head up a VP search committee. This worked well for George Dubya.[2]

It great to see that McCain still respects Cheney, though, as the article notes:

McCain (R-Ariz.), asked about Cheney’s comments during a television appearance Monday morning, responded with a sarcastic dig at the former vice president’s support for harsh tactics in questioning suspected terrorists.

“I’m always glad to get comments four years later,” McCain quipped to Fox News. “Look, I respect the vice president. He and I had strong disagreements as to whether we should torture people or not. I don’t think we should have.”

Ex-governor of AlaskaFor his part McCain still defends his pick and as recently as July of this year said “we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate [than Romney]”.

Bachblog covered McCain’s pick four years ago in On the Eve of Self-Destruction.

Notes

  1. Count me among the number of liberals salivating at the notion of Cheney locked up in a Nigerian prison for one of the least of his crimes. If only justice really did prevail … [^]
  2. Cheney recommended himself for the job. At least one political commentator—his daughter Mary Cheney— has called him “the greatest Vice President in history.” [^]
