Crossword #17: Ars Poetica

Leinenkugels Summer SamplerWith the publication today of this crossword, I’ve almost met my puzzle-every-two-months goal. I’m about a week late. Rather than suing me for breach of contract, why not grab a light, fruity summer beer (a Leinenkugel’s, perhaps) and a sharp pencil? Unless you are at work, of course. In that case you’d best make it a six-pack.

Mea culpa

A day or two before a new puzzle hits my blog, I generally send it to a handful of people whom I consider to be among my more faithful puzzle-doers. I do this primarily because I am eager to get it out. Secondarily, I know that I will be informed of any egregious errors. It really isn’t my intention to sign them up as proofreaders and unpaid labor. I just hope to hear “I enjoyed it” from them, and I’m looking forward to one day hearing “it’s error-free and darn near perfect.”

Puzzle thumbnailI send to a “bcc” list so solvers aren’t exposed to spoilers. This time I screwed up and used a “cc” list and there were spoilers. Entirely my fault. (I do appreciate the feedback I received. Thanks go out to George, Martin, Carl, Paul and Bob. Each made valuable comments. I cleaned up some clues in response to their feedback and I used the title “Ars Poetica” suggested by Bob.)

To get the sour taste of my foul-up out of my mouth, I won’t wait two months before publishing another puzzle. I have a fun theme in mind. You will see it soon, I hope. (Before that–within a week–I’ll publish the solution to this one along with a self-flagellating account of its imperfections.)

  1. The Across Lite program can be downloaded for free at Litsoft.com and runs on Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X. I can recommend it unreservedly. It is easy to install and use, and is free of any of the malware garbage that commonly plagues freeware. [^]
