Cutbacks at U.S. Airways

US Airways plane in Hudson River

NEW YORK, NY—In an effort to cut costs, U.S. Airways’ popular Boston-to-New York City flights will no longer land at La Guardia airport. Instead, the airline will land in the Hudson River and rely on inflatable lifeboats to ferry passengers to the city. Fliers can cut $50 off of the cost of a one-way ticket from Boston by arranging their own transportation from the plane. On Thursday’s inaugural flight several cost-conscious passengers did just that, boarding the plane in wetsuits and stuffing four-foot long styrofoam “kick boards” in overhead compartments. They were last seen paddling west from the plane toward lower Manhattan.
