Lifebird #27 - A “Lookie-lou” and his mate
My first Mallard was spotted in my yard?! Yes, that’s true. True in the sense that it was the first one checked off on my life list. I was still counting only “yardbirds” at this time.
This lifer pair was scouting our property as a possible nesting site. This despite the fact that other than small bird baths, there is no water in our yard (there is a very small pond across the street). The scouting part happened a few times, in fact, but in the end they decided against sharing this city lot with us. Probably a wise decision. Our dog Katie is friendly, but she has her limits.
I photographed the two feeding males pictured at the top of this page at Como Lake in St. Paul. The lousy image of a pair of ducks-out-of-water used below is of the “lookie-lous” of the post’s title. Below that, cute and fuzzy ducklings!
