Crossword #11: Sometimes Wise
Finally, a new puzzle for your consideration. My previous effort was published five months ago. Long ago enough, it seems, to make at least one of you wonder whether or not I was done with this particular dilettantish obsession.
No, I was not.
Please enjoy this one, or, if you must, endure it.[1]
The painting depicted above, La Danse, is part of the permanent collection at The Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. Joann and I saw it there in August 2013. Its painter is the answer to 11-Down.
This puzzle’s theme is a playful one. It breaks convention in that the five theme answers are not the longest ones in the puzzle. Two of them are seven letters long and there is a total of twenty(!) non-theme sevens and one non-theme nine.

- Several friends—talented cruciverbalists all—provided me with valuable feedback on an earlier iteration of this puzzle. I will write more about their contributions when I post the solution. [^]
- The Across Lite program can be downloaded for free at Litsoft.com and runs on Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X. I can recommend it unreservedly. It is easy to install and use, and is free of any of the malware garbage that commonly plagues freeware. [^]
